【From Teacher’s Eye　～授業後の先生から一言～】

This week, we are playing detectives to catch the criminal who steals money from a supermarket’s cash register! First we play a fun game of ‘Catch the Thief’, which is like ‘Throw the Handkerchief’, except that you steal the money from behind someone in the circle and run. Then we read a book about ‘Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?’ Then we play a game of ‘I Spy with My Little Eyes’, where I give them hints of something I found with its size, colour and shape. Finally, we go to a supermarket where a theft takes place and we find clues one after the other which point towards the answer to “Who is the criminal?”

【From Teacher’s Eye　～授業後の先生から一言～】

This week, we celebrate Halloween by cooking Pumpkin-yaki and dressing up in costumes! During the cooking activity, the students learn how to make the batter, pour it into the takoyaki pan and “Turn it around”. After it’s done, they transfer it to a plate and “Draw a scary face on it” with chocolate syrup. They eat the “Sweet” Pumpkin-yaki with “Bitter” tea. Then they dress up into their favourite costumes and we play a game of “Who am I?”, where I sit behind a curtain and try to guess the costume from their shadows. Then the students gather together and say “Trick or treat” and we wish each other “Happy Halloween!”.

Halloween’s almost here! So this week, we go Halloween shopping. The students express how to say, “I want to be _____” to express whom they want to dress up as on Halloween. They learn how to answer to the question “Why?” with “Because _____”. For the shopping, they choose which costume they want and try to buy it. They learn phrases such as “I want this one! and “How much is it?”

10/10・11・12『Let’s Celebrate the Indian Festival of Light – Diwali （インドの光の祭り（ディワリ）を祝おう！）』を開催。

This week, we celebrate the Indian festival of lights – Diwali. How do we do that? We make a lantern with coloured paper in activity time. But before that, I explain to them what Diwali is and how we celebrate it in India with clay lamps, lanterns, decorations made with coloured powder, sweets and firecrackers! But why is Diwali celebrated in India? It is to commemorate the return of Lord Rama and his wife Sita to their kingdom after defeating the evil lord Ravana. In activity time, after making the lantern, the students learn phrases such as “Switch on the light” and “So pretty and colourful”. We also revise “I want ___” during homework discussion to express which type of sweet the students want and play a game of quoites to actually get the sweets.

10/3・4・5『Let’s Make And Shake A Tambourine! 』（タンバリンを作って、振ってみよう！）』を開催。

This week, we have fun with music using a self-made tambourine. We also learn to express how to say “I want ___” by looking at cards of different foods! While making the tambourine, the students learn the phrase, “Punch a hole” and after making it, “Shake the tambourine” and “Tap the tambourine”. Then we enjoy by playing music on the tambourine and doing the “Hokey Pokey” dance!

This week, the students learn how to say “I am good at ___”. We play a treasure hunt game to find all the ingredients for the mug cake. The students look for the ingredients with clues written on a piece of paper, like “Under the table” or “On the shelf” or “Behind the whiteboard”. They learn how to answer to “Where is the ___?” with “It’s here!”. Then we start preparing for the mugcake. The students learn the difference between tablespoon and teaspoon. They learn how to measure with 1, 1/2 and 1/4 spoons. While the cake is cooking in the microwave, they learn how to say “Look, it’s rising!”. When they eat the cake, they say, “It’s yummy!” and “It’s so fluffy!”.

This week, we revise the phrase “I like ___”. We also revise “I can ___! / I can’t ___!” with a dare game, where the students pass around a soft toy and whoever the song stops on has to complete a challenge. They can react with, “I can do it” or “I can’t do it!” For the activity, we look at a few objects such as leaf, 1000 yen note, salt, pepper, etc. under the microscope. The students learn to say “It’s blurry!” or “It’s clear!” while the teacher adjusts the focus. They react with “It’s so different!”

This week, we learn how to use the phrases “I can ___”, “I can’t ___” and “Can you ___?”

We complete making the bubble-print box. We put different objects such as sponge, shells, coins, etc. in the box and make different sounds when we “Shake the box”. The students have to answer to “Can you hear it?” with “Yes, I can!” or “No, I can’t!” Then they have to guess “What’s inside the box?”

Circle Time: This week, we talk about how the children’s summer vacation was, so they learn the use of the question word “How” and reply with “It was good/bad”. In reading time, we learn how to use the question word “who”.

Activity Time: This week, we cut and folded paper to make a box. Through this activity, the children learn phrases like “Cut on the black lines” and “Fold on the dotted lines”. This activity will continue next week, where we will use paint and soap water to make bubble prints on the box.

【From Teacher’s Eye　～授業後の先生から一言～】

Circle Time: This week’s theme is summer. In the homework discussion, we talk about the beach. During conversation practice, we play a shuffle game with cups and a shell, where they learn how to answer to “Where is the shell?” with “In cup no. 1/2/3”. Before the activity, we play a shell-searching game where I ask them to search for cockle shells (similar to the one in my hand) in the sand.

Activity Time: This week, we paint shells and decorate a picture frame with them. Through this activity, the children learn phrases like “Paint the shells”, “Let it dry”, “Blow on it” and “Stick it on the frame”.
