This week it was time to relax and have fun. Because it is Valentine’s day soon we decided to play a game of collect the hearts. Each student had a piece of paper with the numbers 1 to 6 on it. With the help of a die we collected our hearts. Someone rolled a six. ”Put the heart on number six.” the class instructed. As one student’s turn ended another one’s began, ”It’s my turn.” Who could collect the most hearts? Who could collect them the quickest?

Repetition is an important thing when you’re learning a language, so in this weeks one-on-one we repeated, as usual, the things we had learnt the past few weeks. I was glad to see how many students were able to reply in full sentences. Truly a great job! The previous week we had learned the words ”on” and ”under”. This week we added ”behind” and ”in front of”. We gave the children a puzzle to finish, but there was one problem; the last piece was missing, hidden either by me or a fellow student! ”Where is it?” Everyone asked. ”It’s behind the books,” another explained. After finding all he pieces we finally saw what it was. ”It’s a cat!’

We’ve all had those moments where we’ve lost our keys, our wallets, phones or other items. Sometimes someoene around you knows where you’ve put it and can help you find it by saying, for example: ”It’s on the table.”  This week we had a look at the words ‘on’ and ‘under’. Is the magnet on or under the table? Is it on or under the chair? How about the spiders that we read about, where were they? Spiders are so small they can be in all sorts of places! There were spiders on the floor, under the bed, in the window, but fear not, there were none in our classroom. What we did have was equipment to make poffertjes! What’s that, you ask? Poffertjes are really small pancakes often enjoyed as a snack in the Netherlands. Telling each other what to do our students made some lovely, little pancakes. Enjoy!

【From Teacher’s Eye ~授業後の先生から一言~】

Is there a party going on at Hop!?  What are all those balloons for?  This week we experimented with baking soda, vinegar and balloons.
What happens when you add baking soda to vinegar? We’ve seen it before in our experiment with colours, haven’t we? What a fizzy, foamy, colourful week!
This week we took not one balloon, but three balloons (don’t forget to add the ‘s’ when it’s plural!), three bottles, two spoons, a funnel some vinegar and baking soda.
Putting baking soda in each balloon with the help of our funnel and pouring vinegar in each bottle our experiment was not finished.
”What’s next?”
This next part was a bit tricky, because you need two hands to stretch the balloon and place it over the opening of the bottle. Since no one has three hands we needed a second person to hold the bottle.
”(Can you) hold the bottle.”
”Ok!”
Our experiment had not yet come to an end. It was time to lift up the balloons and let the baking soda fall into the vinegar. Immediately we heard great fizzing.
”Sounds like rain.” One student noted.
And as the mixture was fizzing and bubbling it blew up our balloons, some bigger than others!
Having learnt ‘long, longer, longest’ and ‘big, bigger, biggest’ shortly before, I could ask them: ”Which one is the biggest?”
”This one!”
Who would have thought you could blow up a balloon with vinegar and baking soda, but unless you like a sour smell hanging around your house, I would not recommend this method for your next party.

Most of us go to the hairdresser every once in a while, be it to change the way we look or just to trim off split ends. Sometimes, however, we come home, look in the mirror and feel disappointed. This is especially true for those among us who travel. Why? Maybe it’s because we couldn’t communicate exactly what we wanted to our hairdresser. We thought it would be a good idea to practice going to the hairdresser in English!
What can we expect to hear and what should we reply? Perhaps it’s a good idea to bring a photo and show what it is you want. Let’s practice, but remember to be polite and finish your sentences with: please.
We hope your next experience at the hairdresser will be a pleasant one.

【From Teacher’s Eye ~授業後の先生から一言~】

If you ask what someones favourite thing about the holidays is the answer may vary from: ”Presents!” and ”Cake!” to ”Being with family and friends.”. Trying to combine these three things we had a little Christmas party here at Hop!. Personally one of my favourite things is making a nice chocolate cake and sharing it with everyone and that’s exactly what we did this week. There was only one little problem: the only one who knew the recipe was the teacher. The children were left with no other option but to ask for instructions.
”How much do we need?” Asks a student holding a packet of pancake mix.
”We need 100 grams of pancake mix.”
100 grams of pancake mix doesn’t make a cake. We all know that.
”What’s next?” Asks another student.
When finally the cake was done and cooling down, we had time to play a game of pin the tail on the reindeer, after which we piped some cream on our cake, put strawberries on top and enjoyed our cake.
”Delicious!”

【From Teacher’s Eye ~授業後の先生から一言~】)
We were in the presence of an angel this week.  But not just any angel, it was a pasta angel!  Sounds confusing?  Let me explain.  In the spirit of this holiday season we decided to make some Christmas decorations to hang in the tree, by the window or anywhere else.  What we made was an Angel out of different kinds of pasta.  Farfalle to serve as wings, penne to make the body and macaroni to make a glowing halo, all glued together to a starry night sky.  But to make these different pasta look like an angel we can’t just glue them in any random manner, now can we?
”Put it this way.” I instructed.
Any student who was still unsure needed simply ask: ”This way?” or ”Like this?”
We also had a look at the word they.  What’s the difference between ‘they’, ‘it’, ‘he’ or ‘she’?  I think most students understood the difference.  But we need a bit more practice.  Let’s try again next week!

【From Teacher’s Eye ~授業後の先生から一言~】

November has been a colourful month here at Hop!, and in order not to forget the students had some time to play a game all about shapes and colours. One game was played with the whole class.
Sometimes when we’re in a shop we can find those ideal shoes or pants, but what if it’s not the right colour or size? This game was to practice asking for a certain product in a certain colour. The students took turns being the shop assistant/customers. The customer -having found red shoes, but wanting another colour- had to take a card and look at the colour and then ask for the shoes in that same colour.
”Do you have these shoes in blue?” He or she would ask.
The assistant in turn would turn around one of the cards that were laying upside-down on the table.
”Yes, we do.” The assistant would answer if the card she turned around showed blue shoes. ”Here you go.”
”No, we don’t.” He or she would say if the colour would turn out to be different.
How many shoes did they collect at the end of this game? Some students quite many!
Now it was time to play a simple ball game with only the teacher, focusing more on what they had learned this month.

It’s no longer warm as we step out our door. As we walk outside we can enjoy the warm autumn colours that the trees have blessed us with. Yet, with all that refreshing air and those magnificent views we find ourselves longing for something warm. What’s better than a wholesome vegetable soup to keep us healthy this time of year? This time rather than having had the teacher giving them intstructions, students had to ask for them themselves. ”What’s next?” They’d ask, but some children must be great cooks at home, for they could instruct their fellow students on the next steps quite easily. ”Next, we’re going to chop the onion.” Add carrot, onion, garlic and leek to a pot with some tomato and herbs and you’ll have a fantastically hearty soup, but be careful, it’s hot! Enjoy!

【From Teacher’s Eye ~授業後の先生から一言~】

Last week we learnt all about colours. We learnt which two colours to blend to make another colour.  This week we learnt even more colours and all about shapes.  Can they ask about the colour or the shape of an object?  We turned it into a game.  One student had to take a card with a colour, look at it without the other students being able to see.
”What colour is it?” The other students ask. ”It’s green!”  The students then got the chance to look around the classroom and find one green object.  One student found a chair that was green another pointed at the wall.  ”A green chair.” ”A green wall.”  On to shapes!  Again the students got to take a card in turns.  ”What shape is it?” ”It’s a triangle!”  This time there were six boxes with pictures of shapes ready for them. The student who asked the question had to throw a ball in the box with the correct shape.  Aim and throw! ”Awesome!”  The ball had ended up in the correct box.
